Corporate Team Building 101
Every business has its needs. Very much like humans need liquid, food and oxygen in order to survive and enjoy a relative level of health. Businesses, regardless of geographical location or industry have a variety of needs to help them survive. One essential need is team building. Corporate team building is an important aspect of success in the workplace that can help save two valuable resources, time and money. But how do you successfully develop and combine the different personalities and abilities of employees to make them cohesive and ultimately more productive? How do you identify the strengths and weaknesses of each employee and why is this important?
If you want your group of talented employees to achieve the peak of their productivity (or as close as it can get) you must provide them with all the necessary resources to uphold their duties. One important aspect needed to do this, is to know each employee’s strengths and weaknesses. Managers must know how to utilize their staff in the most productive means possible. Doing this can sometimes feel like a challenge, when you're trying to run a business or company for most of the day. Regardless of how busy you feel during the day-to-day hustle, it is important to schedule time to get to know your employees and how they operate.
Using team building exercises can help mangers and upper level personnel to glean a better understanding of their staff’s various strengths and abilities. Even if you only have time to schedule an office dinner party or half day retreat once per quarter, you can take away a great deal of knowledge from these types of events. Merely watching how your staff interacts with one another, communicates and socializes can help you get a better idea of how to run your in-office activities. For example, if you notice that there are clicks or clusters of people that socialize more with each other than others, this could represent the same dynamic inside of the office. Keep this in mind and take notice of how the staff communicates with one another during the work day. If there are certain departments or personnel that don't interact or communicate as much as they should, make it a point to say something and fix this.
Clear and transparent communication, both in and out of the office, is an essential aspect of a successful business. If you feel that your employees or various departments are not communicating effectively - make it a point to correct this. Team building events and exercises can be used in a variety of ways to help in these situations. If you have the time, you can turn the planning and setup of an event into a team-building exercise in and of itself. Do this by delegating different tasks to various employees who can help plan everything from location, cuisine and transportation to budgeting and activity scheduling.
Team building events are also a great way to take some time and reward your staff or offer performance incentives. Using this will help to motivate employees and reinvigorate morale throughout the year. Don't just rely on the day-to-day methods for keeping the office in momentum. Sometimes, taking a few steps back (or outside of the office) can help provide greater incite about the bulk of the people working for you and your company.
